General Sherman's Letter
This is a fantastic piece of military history! The Union Army of the West had just won a major victory at Chattanooga. In the letter Sherman is sharing his vision of "drift of events" with General Logan and encouraging him to be ready for what lay ahead. "I have seen Gen. Grant and Dodge is also here" "on the 2nd of Jan will start for Cairo and in concert with admiral Porter must do something to check the boldness of our enemy in attacking boats on the Mississippi." "I think I see one or two quick blows that will astonish the natives of the south and will convince them...that still it may reach & kill their friends & families hundreds of miles off." "will put the Nashville & Decatur Road in order" We will have a triangle of RR, Nashville the apex, and the base along the Tennessee. You are to repair & hold this base. Gather forage & supplies and be ready for the next great move." "Grant may want you at sometime to feign on Rome. If so the proper way will be to cross at Guntersville. A division to move out on the old Huntsville & Rome Road towards the Coosa near Taylorsville." "Remember the 5th Ohio Cavalry belongs to you. I left it temporarily on Hiwassee with orders to join you as soon as Col. Long's Brigade was reinforced." "If weather continues good I advise you to set the corps down to their positions as soon as possible for we are liable to have rain & very bad roads in winter....Athens, Huntsville, Paint Rock, & Larkinsville would be a very good distribution for the divisions." Signed as W. T Sherman, most probably by a secretary. (The Battle of Lookout Mountain was part of the recent Union Victory of Chattanooga. See next two lots.)
