Frederick Volck (German-Conf. Am 1833-1891) sculpted this original bronze bust of General Lee in 1863 when he was asked by the Confederate War Dept in Richmond, VA to do so. This sculpture was to rally the troops as well as the Southern people when the Civil War was raging with no end in sight. Volck was employed in the Confederate Naval Ordinance Dept. and he took exact measurements of Lee as well as Lee's horse, Traveler. In 1863 Volck cast a limited amount of these statues, as there was a limited amount of bronze, as most bronze was cast into cannons and other armaments of war. This bronze is from the original terra cotta done by Volck. Measures 20 inches tall x 11 inches wide x 11 inches deep and weighs 50 pounds. The bronze rests on a 2 inch thick circular black marble plinth. On the front of the bust underneath in block letters is inscribed "ROBERT E. LEE" and on the backside also in block letters is inscribed "Frederick Volck, 1863, Richmond, VA." Bronze has been refinished to its original state.
