The content of this letter reflects the staunch attitude Lyon held regarding succession, he greatly opposed Missouri's succession and even disguised himself as a farm woman in order to spy on the troops training for home defense. Lyon was the first Union General to be killed in the Civil War. The letter reads in part, "…with authority to be admitted into the Union as Slave States or not, as the people shall see fit, and though the Bill as I understand finally passed the Congress, is less offensive than Douglass' Bill, yet as it repeals the Missouri Compromise, and illustrates the alarming fact, that the slave power of our country stops not at constitutional restraints, nor solemn compacts… If in this dangerous attitude, the north willingly submits to this insult and degradation, I shall deem myself fortunate I am not a resident there…"

The letter is in fine condition; usual folds are present; water damage stains present on lower edge of the verso; the letter is not complete, we only have the final page of what was a longer letter.
