General Jacques MacDonald document signed, dated 8 June 1816. The Grand Chancellor of the French Legion of Honor sends an official inquiry (on Legion engraved paper) about a chevalier (knight), one of the five honorary degrees held by members of the Legion. Napoleon established the Legion of Honor in 1802 as France's highest decoration. When Louis XVIII was restored to the throne in 1815, he maintained the Legion of Honor, appointing MacDonald as Grand Chancellor. The 8'' x 12.25'' single page document with minimal toning is near fine.
