Featured in this lot is this original stereoview photo taken by Charles Weitfle (1836-1921) on July 22nd, 1880 of General Grants visit to Leadville, Colorado. Charles Weitfle (1836-1921) was one of the most prolific photographer and publisher of Central City, Colorado. In 1860 Weitfle opened a studio in Washington, D.C. and until the close of the Civil War operated a branch gallery with the 6th Army Corps. In 1878, he was drawn to the opportunities to settle in Central City, Colorado. This photo shows Harrison Avenue in Leadville, Colorado before General Grants arrival. Banners can be seen hanging over businesses and a large "Welcome Citizen" banner hung over the street. The bottom left reads, "No. 41. Harrison Avenue, Leadville, Colo.". The back of the photo gives a write-up on the town of Leadville and reads, "Stereoscopic Views of Colorado Scenery / Leadville / Photographed by Chas. Weitfle, Central city, Colo. / Headquarters for Colorado Views / Over 300 different views for sale / Also awarded the Silver Medal of 1879". The photo shows good condition overall with slight wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. The photo measures 4" L x 7" W adn weighs under 6 ounces.
