<B>General George Washington Goethals Autograph Note Signed</B></I> "<I>G. W. Goethals</B></I>". A one page note (with envelope) on Shoreham Hotel stationary, 5.25" x 7", n.d. November 10, 1912 to Mrs. Franklin MacVeagh, wife of the secretary of the Treasury, declining a dinner invitation. Goethals (1858 - 1928) was a United States Army officer and civil engineer, best known for his supervision of construction and the opening of the Panama Canal. A graduate of the United States Military Academy (1880), he taught civil and military engineering at the academy until 1888. During the Spanish-American War he was lieutenant colonel and chief of engineers of United States Volunteers. In 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt appointed George Washington Goethals chief engineer of the Panama Canal. The building of the Canal was completed in 1914, one year ahead of the target date.
