<B>General George Meade Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>Geo. G. Meade Capt[ain]. Top[ograhpical]. S[urve]y[e]rs</B></I>" as captain, Topographical Engineers. One page, 7.5" x 9.75", Detroit, April 12, 1860, to Wm. Buell & Son. Meade, after the Mexican War, returned to his duties as a military engineer. This letter is in response to the receipt of a shipment of telescopes, in part: "<I>...the french glass sent, is exactly the article I have been in search of, & is in all respects adapted to my purpose...Please when you have completed the new one now in hand & sent it- forward your account for the three to Capt. I. C. Woodruff...</B></I>" In August of the following year, Meade's career would take off with a key promotion from Captain to Brigadier General in the Union Army. He would be promoted to major general for his gallant conduct at Fredericksburg. Meade would of course, make his most lasting impression leading Union forces at Gettysburg. Light soiling, else Fine.
