General George Henry Thomas Circular Signed "G H Thomas A.Q.M. Genl U.S.A". Four pages, printed circular, Washington, June 19, 1860. In this letter, Thomas publicizes his concern over the possible loss of a promotion: "...I now ask to be promoted to that rank, made vacant by the death of my late friend and chief, General Jesup. That I have a right to ask for it will be seen by the foregoing statement. I consider it my legal right; yet, should I be seen in error on this point, I claim it as having earned it by my service and rank in the army..." Known as the "Rock of Chicamauga," Thomas was a Union major general who commanded forces at Chickamauga, Shiloh, Atlanta and Franklin. Folds and just a bit of soiling, else fine.
