This original Civil War Period Carte de Visite of General George Armstrong Custer measures about 2.25" by 4" with a handsome central portrait image showing Custer in his Union military uniform, seated facing left. Printing below image reads “Genl Custer”. Backstamp reads, “Published by E&H.T. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York. From Photographic Negative in Brady’s National Portrait Gallery”. Also, in period hand and deep brown ink upon the back left edge, away from the imprint is written, “General Custer.” The overall condition of this CDV is outstanding. It is perfectly centered with full margins with decorative gold gilt outer borders, the card is crisp, clean and image having excellent contrast and clarity.

He is credited with being the father of Photojournalism.
