General David S. Stanley Autograph Letter
General David S. Stanley Autograph Letter With Custer Content. Two pages, 5.5” x 9.25”, on Headquarters Department of Texas letterhead, San Antonio, December 13, 1888. General David S. Stanley (1828-1902) enjoyed a distinguished military career during the Civil War. Serving under William T. Sherman, he was presented a Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Franklin. After the war he was transferred to Dakota Territory and led the 1873 Yellowstone Expedition. It was in this capacity that his path crossed with George Custer, who briefly served under Stanley. In this letter to an unidentified general who has made a request for examples of Custer's letters Stanley writes in part: “I delayed answering your letter to see if I could find one of Custer's letters. I had one or two but they are lost or destroyed, I think Mike Sherman or Genl. Thos. L. Rosser Minneapolis can furnish you one.” Custer had by the 1880s become something of a legend and perhaps the general was looking for a little something for his collection. Fine condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
