General Daniel E. Sickles Autograph Note. One page, 5” x 8”, on Brevoort House letterhead, New York, November 1, 1876, in ink, to Commodore James William Augustus Nicholson, with docketing on the verso of the integral sheet. In this short note the controversial Union general recommends a former soldier for employment in the Navy Yard. Written in the third person it reads in full: “Maj. Gen'l Sickles presents his compliments to Commodore Nicholson and takes the liberty of recommending the bearer - Private Redmond late of Co. B. 71st N.Y. Vol's- for employment in the Navy Yard. Redmond was a good soldier and is a quiet, worthy man deserving help, & Gen. S. would Esteem it a favor if Commodore Nicholson could make room for the applicant sic .” The note bears some light but uneven toning, a small area where the ink has smudged, else it is in very good condition. From the collection of Henry E.
