General Beauregard Responds to General Sherman
<Our item number 140232><B>Beauregard, Pierre G.T.</B> &#40;1818-93&#41; Confederate general, writer, civil servant, and inventor. He commanded the defenses of Charleston, South Carolina for the Battle of Fort Sumter. After the war, he was manager of the Louisiana lottery, commissioner of New Orleans&#39; public works and wrote several books about the war. <BR><BR>Autograph endorsement signed &#34;Recd. at N.O. Augt 13th 1865 G.T.B&#34; at the bottom of the second page of Beauregard&#39;s copy of a letter from William T. Sherman &#40;the copy of Sherman&#39;s letter was secretarially written and signed&#41;. Sherman was responding to Beauregard&#39;s letter requesting his personal papers and effects that were seized during the Civil War. In small part: &#34;…I have sent both to Genl Hoffman at Washington with this Endorsement…&#39;they should be returned to him as something too small for a great Government to notice…&#39;&#34;. He suggests other channels he might pursue and concludes: &#34;…all conventions sh ould be religiously kept, for on them are based the most Sacred Rights of War and consequent Peace…&#34; Chipping to top left corner of second sheet and small edge tear affecting the &#34;T&#34; in the Beauregard&#39;s initials.
