Offered in this lot are the Scarce and Rare Nine First Edition Issues of The Galaxy Magazine from 1872, 1873, and 1876, publisher Sheldon & Company, New York, with content from General Armstrong Custer including the first printing of what would become his book, "My Life on the Plains" originally published serially in the Galaxy magazine starting in 1872. Issues include: Jan. 1872 - Vol. 13, No. 1, April & May 1872; Aug. & Dec. 1873; and, March, April, Aug. and October 1876. Galaxy Magazine, or, "The Galaxy: An Illustrated Monthly" was an American monthly magazine from 1868 until it was eventually absorbed by The Atlantic Monthly in 1878. Notable contributors to the magazine include Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Ion Hanford Perdicaris and Henry James. In 2021, a first edition of "My Life on the Plains" sold for $3,000.00, and in the 2023 summer another first edition sold for $1,500.00. Magazines are in amazingly preserved condition. First four have cream colored covers, the remainder have pale green colored covers. Covers have a variety of edge tatters though spine printing is intact. Last four have deckled pages, some moisture staining noted as well as both age tanning and foxing. First five each measure 9.25"L x 6.25"W, last four each are 10"L x 6.25"W, combined weight is 4lb 6oz.*
