Gene Szafran (1941), ?Metamorphosis? surrealist illustration, pen and watercolor.
Born in Detroit Michigan, Gene Szafran became a renowned illustrator for the country?s most distinguished magazines including "Playboy," "Cosmopolitan," "Penthouse," "McCall's," "Fortune," and ?Bantam Books.? He studied and later taught at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit and also taught at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He then moved to Connecticut as a freelance artist and worked as an illustrator out of New York City. He has personal interests of photography and sculpture that he often incorporates into his distinctive illustrations.
This is a very unique and intriguing surrealistic illustration by Szafran. It is full of excellent line work that crosshatches through the richly saturated colors, giving it an edgy, modern appeal. This picture is appropriately double matted in pink and black mats that imitate those colors found in the illustration. The rich black, contemporary style frame is also an excellent addition to this picture and is a perfect finishing touch to this work of art. The entire piece, including frame, measures 25? x 25?. Szafran?s artwork continues to increase in worth, making the purchase of his art a valuable investment.
