Gene Stratton-Porter: Jesus of the Emerald
Gene Stratton-Porter Jesus of the Emerald First Edition. (Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1923), first edition, original white boards with gilt and color decorations, cello dust jacket intact (very rare), 8vo (6" x 9.25"), with decorations by Edward Everett Winchell. This book is a long poem about the legend of Lentulus, an envoy of Tiberius Caesar, who was sent to investigate and bring back intelligence on Jesus of Nazareth. Upon his return, Tiberius was moved by the reports of the beauty of Jesus, Caesar called a master craftsman to carve the true likeness of Jesus on a large emerald. The cover of this book shows a depiction of this emerald and the chain on which it was bound. A beautiful religious folk tale. In very good condition, with light overall soiling, and the corners are rounded and bumped. The cello cover, being very fragile, has cracked slightly and lost a few pieces, but overall this is an attractive, scarce book.
