Gene Colan - Original Dracula Illustration (Marvel, undated). Regarded by many as one of the greatest comics ever published, Marvel's Tomb of Dracula comic still attracts a passionate core of fans, more than two decades after the last issue was published in 1979. For many of the book's fans, "Gentleman" Gene Colan succeeded in capturing the quintessential Dracula: powerful, commanding and devastatingly attractive. Offered here is a wonderful study of the Prince of Vampires, rendered by Colan in a moody, atmospheric ink wash technique. It's not known what this piece was created for. It might have been done at the beginning of the book as character studies, it might have been intended as a pin-up, or it might have been created for licensing. Whatever its origins, there's no denying that this is Colan at his best. His cinematic approach is evident here, as is his total mastery of facial expressions. Measuring approximately 11.5" x 17", this piece is in excellent condition. There is a staple at the top of the piece, in the margin, and the piece has obviously been rolled, as it is somewhat bowed. None of these defects affect the art, however, and there are no crease lines in evidence. Overall, a beautiful rendition of Stoker's classic character by a true master.
