Gen. William Smith. Served in Confederate Congress between campaigns at 1st and 2nd Manassas, Peninsula, Seven Days, Sharpsburg, Antietam, and Gettysburg; wounded five times. Previously, careers as lawyer, established line of U.S. Mail and passenger post coaches in Virginia, Georgia, and the Carolinas; Representative in both state and federal Congresses, and Governor of Virginia twice. D.S., 1848, during first term. Land grant to Daniel Welcher. Vellum, 11 x 14, with large signature of Smith at bottom, near state seal. Nicknamed "Extra Billy," he was known for surprising attire: on one occasion, rode into battle wearing a beaver hat and blue umbrella. Original folds, else about fine.
