Gen. W.T. Sherman Letter Re: Gen. John A. Logan General William T. Sherman Letter 2 Days After Gener
General William T. Sherman Letter 2 Days After General John Logan's Death ALS: "W.T. Sherman", 1p, 5.5" x 9.25". 5th Ave Hotel, New York, December 28, 1886. To Huren. In part: "The large Scroll which was framed & hung in my Parlor was by a Philadelphia Company the name of which has Escaped me, but the Same which executed the one I saw in Sheridans office in the War Department- I think it cost 100 or 150 dollars, framed. I think on the 'Escutcheon' on the frame you will find the address you seek. Logans death was much more sudden than I had apprehended. He used to be troubled with his throat with too much speaking in the open air. At first he was very angry with me about putting Howard over him, but of late years he toned down very much and was mostly friendly to me, especially the few last. I feel very deeply for the family because I know they entertained strong hopes that he would become President. Wishing you continued health and honor." In 1883, Philip H. Sheridan succeeded William T. Sherman as Commanding General, U.S. Army, had an office in the War Department, and held that position until shortly before his death in 1888. General John A. Logan led a corps of the Army of the Tennessee in General William T. Sherman's Atlanta campaign (1864) and commanded that army for a short time. However, Sherman gave General Oliver O. Howard the permanent command, and General Logan returned to his corps for the march through the Carolinas. Logan served as U.S. Senator from Illinois from 1871-1877 and again from 1880 until his death in Washington, D.C. on December 26, 1886, two days before Sherman wrote this letter. Just two years earlier, Logan had been the Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States. Accompanied by a carte-de-visite of Sherman, 2.25" x 3.5". Both items are in very fine condition.
