Gen. Oliver Otis Howard's Personal Signed Copy
General Oliver Otis Howard: O.O. Howard's Personal Signed Copy of Regulations for the Army of the United States, 1857. (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1857 . Signed on the front free endpaper: “O.O. Howard 1st Lt. Ordnance 25 Jan'y 1860 West Point NY.” On the front pastedown endpaper, Howard has drawn a small sketch of a cannon inside a cross-section of a rampart; on the rear pastedown endpaper Howard has done some ciphers and has drawn what appears to be a bullet or a shell. Octavo (7.25” x 4.5”). 480 pp. Original cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine. Minor foxing, a few faint water stains, but overall a very good copy, housed in custom quarter morocco book-backed slipcase with five raised bands and gilt tooling on the spine. Howard was an American Civil War General and Indian fighter. He graduated fourth in his class from West Point in 1854, and subsequently taught mathematics at that military academy from 1857 until the outbreak of the Civil War: it was during this period that he signed his copy of the Regulations. He led a brigade at First Bull Run and performed so well he was named Brigadier General of Volunteers. Received a congressional citation for his leadership at Gettysburg and was awarded a Medal of Honor for his heroic leadership in the Battle of Seven Pines. He was a field commander during the Nez Perce campaign of 1877, rising in ranks to finally become Major General in 1886. The book contains Jefferson Davis' preface as Secretary of War.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
