First edition, second issue with “Major-General” on the frontispiece portrait caption. A beautiful signed presentation copy, boldly inscribed by the General on the recto of the frontispiece: “Rev. James B. Dunn, With the compliments and best wishes, of Nelson A. Miles.” Quarto (9.5” x 7”). Vii, 591 pages. With wonderful western drawings by Remington and others. Very attractive half black morocco over blue pebble-grain cloth boards, lettered in gilt (re-backed by the Cottage bindery in Bath). All edges marbled, floral endpapers. A stunning copy in fine condition, now housed in a black cloth slipcase. Miles was an American Army commander who served through the Civil War and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. A Colonel in the US Army (1866), he engaged in frontier Indian fighting (1869-80); A Brigadier General (1880) and Major General (1890); he led successful campaigns against Apache and Sioux Indian tribes. He was a senior commander in the US Army (1895); and was in Cuba and Puerto Rico (1898).
