After brilliant military career in China and Africa, suppressed slave trade; evacuated 2,500 women, children and wounded from Khartoum before being killed there, after a siege of 317 days. Envelope front in his hand to a General at Windsor Castle, rerouted to Isle of Wight. With copy of small portrait. With two letters on mourning stationery, one with envelope, Apr. 1885, after his death, from his sister and sister-in-law, the latter writing for his wife, expressing thanks for their sympathy.
