Egyptologist (1846–1916) known for his studies of hieroglyphics and archaeological excavations in Egypt. ALS in French, signed “G. Maspero,” one page, 4.25 x 7, October 8, 1900. In full (translated): “Please tell Syre that I am not totally sure regarding the old epochs. Magan meant Egypt, although it is certainly the case in the ancient times, by the way you can speak about this in Egypt when he will be back. I close this in haste to finish my preparations for the trip.” In very good condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds (the vertical fold passing through first letter of the signature), scattered toning, and heavy creasing to right edge. After over a decade back in Paris, Maspero eagerly returned to Egypt in 1900 to oversee the enormous—and rapidly growing—collections in the Bulak Museum. A rare letter with desirable direct references to Egypt, the site of his greatest successes.
