Gary Hallgren - The Mickey Mouse Cube #299 Original Art (1976).
Gary Hallgren - "The Mickey Mouse Cube #299" Original Art (1976). Gary Hallgren grew up in the Pacific Northwest and studied painting and design at Western Washington State College. He later became a sign painter, specializing in an Art Nouveau style. Gary became involved with the underground comix scene around 1970. Notes on the back of this piece indicate that it was sold at a fund-raiser in order to benefit the "Air Pirates", Dan O' Neill, Bobby London, Ted Richards and Shary Flenniken. These Air Pirates Funnies creators were sued by Walt Disney Enterprises when Disney started a process against the artists for copyright infringement. The case was finally settled out of court. Dan O'Neill recalled, "When they came after me, I contacted my cartoonist buddies and started a campaign called the Mouse Liberation Front. I'm only one artist, but I got 1,000 artists to each do one, thirty tons of art appeared in days. Disney was trying to get me for contempt of court. The judge was quite interesting, he told me he thought they had a case, and strongly urged me to settle. Finally Disney surrendered, about as I was to be hauled off to the federal penitentiary, and signed a peace treaty with the Mouse Liberation Front." In Gary Hallgren's drawing an isometric op-art cube shows three distinct views of Mickey icons, each in a different style. The grid lines in the image serve as a powerful metaphor of a cage. The work is drawn in ink and colored pencils, and measures an overall 11" x 14". It's in Excellent condition and is a concise visual commentary on the whole affair.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
