Once owned by Edwin Garthwaite. This kit was made in Freiberg, Germany. Garthwaite, a mining engineer, was born in San Francisco, CA on 5 August 1857. He attended the University of California, Berkeley for two years and finished his education in Freiberg, Germany in 1881. By the 1870s the school had established the reputation as being the leader in a variety of different mining related subjects; it was the place to be for any up and coming mining engineer or geologist. The young Garthwaite could often be seen walking down the cobblestone streets with other American students all wearing the latest miner’s outfit and brimless hat with lamp. Garthwaite later worked in Mexico, Northern California and in 1895 went to work in Rhodesia for over ten years, pioneering the art of mining. The kit comes in a wood case and is missing a few pieces. It`s made in Freiberg, Germany, c1870 and still has the original label. Garthwaite also did mining work in most of the West and into Mexico. This is a rare treasure for any mining enthusiast or collector. A real piece of American mining history [Ref: Spence, Clark.Mining Engineers and the Americana West, 1970, pp 29-30]. - Vinegar Collection -59445
