Preliminary illustration by American artist Garth Williams for an early scene in E.B. White's 1952 beloved children's book ''Charlotte's Web.'' In this pencil drawing, Farmer Arable, who has planned to use the ax to kill a runt piglet, is surprised by his daughter Fern, who tries to prevent him from killing the pig who would become her pet, Wilbur. Williams initials the 8.5'' x 11'' drawing ''GW'' at the lower right and numbers it ''3.16334'' on the verso. Near fine condition.
