Garfield and Hancock Streak of Lightning Folk Art Campaign Quilt With breathtaking color and design, this hand and machine sewn quilt lends itself to the very definition of folk art in it's tradition and craft. Made of hundreds of ribbons distributed and collected by Mr. Albert Alford during the presidential campaign of 1880, the quilt's pattern is, to quilt aficionados, called "Streak of Lightning". The quilt's pattern, however, was not a description of the lackluster campaign between Winfield Hancock and James A. Garfield. The campaign was described as quite uninspiring, as the two candidates were more in agreement on issues than at odds. Some might say they were cut from the same cloth or in this case sewn.
Using the bold images and different colors of the cloth each streak is pieced by a grouping of ribbons picturing one or the other candidate. The selection of the colors of the ribbons was extremely important in defining the "streaks" so as to make the individual ribbons appear seamless to the onlooker but the pattern of streaks obvious. Quilting was often a community affair but according to the paper sewn to this quilt, the maker was Mrs. Jane Parsons of Jericho, Wisconsin. Not only was she a seamstress but she was excellent at tatting, as evidence by the lacy edge.

Not only did we inherit a sense of artistic beauty and tradition from Mrs Parsons, but also a vision of the history that surrounded her in 1880. Here we offer a rarity of such proportion that we are certain we can say you will never find another like it. Very fine condition. 81" x 68".

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Larg (view shipping information)
