Very Fine condition.

Guiteau wanted to be Minister to Paris after he supported James Garfield's presidential bid. When he did not receive the appointment, Guiteau stalked the president for weeks and shot him at close range in the Washington, D.C. railroad station. Guiteau's lawyer pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but he was found guilty and hanged.

The letter written in 1874 to Judson Janis Esq. reads: "Dear Sir: I gave Mr. Gale, your deputy, $50, to furnish me bail in that English case agt; myself. Mr. G. says you furnished bail: not him. Mr. L. A. Curry says he is on the bond and shall retire without he is paid $25. If I am forced to pay his $25 I shall look to you and Mr. Gale for the damage. Please inform me at once whether you will protect me, or I shall protect myself. I trust to your honor as a Gentleman to protect me.
