Gardner Antietam Photos
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Four Civil War albumen photographs printed from the original plates of Alexander Gardner of KIA soldiers at Antietam, one of the bloodiest battles of the War. Each photograph measures just over 3.5'' x 3'', affixed to the original 14'' x 11'' cardboard mount. A printed calligraphic label at bottom reads, ''Antietam Battlefield / September 17, 1862 / View along Haggerstown Road.'' On the verso of the cardboard mount, in the upper left corner is the signature of General Albert Ordway who writes, ''Compliments of Genl Al Ordway, Washington DC, 1874 to G.S. Hampton.'' The photographs on the bottom are documented as Gardner's, with the lower left being one of his most moving and well-known battlefield photos, of which he captured many. The two top photos are undocumented but clearly taken at the same time as the others, indicating they are Gardner's. Photographs are in very good condition with isolated scuffing. Someone has outlined in pencil the frame and bodies on the lower right photograph. A poignant and dramatic series of Civil War images.
