The second president of Egypt (1918–1970), serving from 1956 until his death. Manuscript DS in Arabic, one page, 11.75 x 18, June 8, 1955. An official Republic of Egypt document issued to General Nathan F. Twining, chief of staff of the US Air Force. In part (translated): “In recognition of your sterling qualities and high virtues, and to strengthen the friendly relations between Egypt and the United States of America, we have conferred upon you the Order of Merit First Class, and ordered this citation to be issued.” Signed at the conclusion by Gamal Abdul Nasser and countersigned by Hassan Ibrahim. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope. The Egyptian Order of Merit is one of the foreign military decorations officially authorized by the US military, and only rarely awarded to senior officials. Along with Muhammad Naguib, Nasser led the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, which removed King Farouk I and heralded a new period of industrialization in Egypt. An impressive document from a rarely seen world leader.
