Galena, IL - $2 1875 Fr. 391 The NB of Galena
Galena, IL - $2 1875 Fr. 391 The NB of Galena Ch. # 831
A very rare note from by far the scarcest of Galena's three issuing banks, with this institution circulating First Charters only and liquidating at the expiration of its charter in 1885. This specimen is one of just six examples of all denominations known from this bank, with offerings over the years limited to just two, one coming five years ago and the second occurring back in 1943, where this very note was sold as part of the first Grinnell sale conducted by B. Max Mehl in May of that year. Interestingly, one census proclaims this note as Crisp Uncirculated, a second labels it Very Good, and a perusal of the original source, the 1943 sale catalogue, has Mr. Mehl describing it as "Strictly Fine, rare." That 1943 terminology corresponds perfectly with the note's actual grade, which is Very Fine-Extremely Fine, although the overall appearance is that of a considerably higher grade example. In its 1943 appearance, this item realized all of $5.15 (which perhaps explains why Mr. Grinnell chose another auctioneer, Barney Bluestone, to sell his main collection some eighteen months later). Expect it to bring considerably more, even on an inflation adjusted basis, by the time the hammer falls this evening.
From The Thomas M.
