Composer (1797–1848), born in Bergamo, Italy. He studied music at Bergamo and Bologna, and produced his first opera in 1818 at Venice. The work which carried his fame beyond Italy was Anna Bolena (1830), and he had several other successes, notably Lucia di Lammermoor (1835). Stricken by paralysis, he became mentally ill. Rare and lengthy AMQS on both sides of an off-white 13 x 8 sheet of musically-lined paper, signed on one side in the right border, “Donizetti 1835.” Donizetti pens 32 intricate bars of music and either lyrics or notations to an unidentified work. In very good condition, with small hole near top not affecting any bars, chipping and paper loss along bottom edge, scattered light soiling, and a strip of toning along the edges of the signed side of the sheet.

The year 1835 was a momentous one for Donizetti, as that was the year his most famous work, Lucia di Lammermoor, was completed. At its premiere that September in Naples, the tragic opera proved to be a resounding success—with the public reception cementing Donizetti’s legacy as one of the world’s greatest operatic composers. A lengthy, elaborate, and rarely seen example of Donizetti’s genius!
