(53 x 64.1 cm) 1857 ESTIMATE: $18,000-22,000 PROVENANCE Private Collection, FRANCE After participating in the first official French government commission The Mission HTliographique (1851), for which he made a repertory of the principal French monuments, Gustave Le Gray continued to work on his geographic itinerary. In 1857, he was commissioned to document the military camps at ChGlons to be bound into an album. This beautiful print from that album reveals Le Gray's remarkable concern for the aesthetics of his exposures, whether the subject be military, historic or scientific. A retrospective exhibition of Le Gray's work is currently on view at the BibliothFque Nationale de France and is planned to travel to the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
