GUNTHER PRIEN BOARD GAME
GUNTHER PRIEN BOARD GAME
Rare board game honoring the achievements of U-boat commander Gunther Prien (1908-1941), Germany's first U-boat ace who snuck his U-47 into the British anchorage at Scapa Flow and sank the Royal Oak with a huge loss of life. The game, titled "With 'Prien' Against England", is contained within a 15 1/2" x 11" box which bears a photo of Prien and a color illustration of a U-boat surfacing near a burning freighter. The 15" x 21 1/2" folding color game board shows British ships, German submarines, and military aircraft from both sides. Also shown are burning British war ships at the Firth of Forth and Scapa Flow. Players apparently navigate their pieces (four color submarine tokens are present) around the board to circumnavigate the North Sea. Instructions, dice, and perhaps some other pieces missing, otherwise very good. Provenance: TIME-LIFE Collection, The War Museum.
