GUENTHER HANS VON KLUGE
A D-Day damage report signed eight days before his suicide

(1882 - 1944) "Cunning Hans", Nazi general who led a field army in Poland, Belgium, France and Russia where he headed the most powerful army in the center, nearly took Moscow, later committed suicide. Fine content partial D.S., 1p. 4to., Aug. 12, 1944, the last page of a listing of damage done to Allied material following the D-Day landing. In part: "...The following successes are noted...against sea targets. Sinking of three destroyers...Heavy damage of a cruiser...H. proved himself as a clever, decisive tactician...buttresses of the defensive front are primarily his work...successful defensive fighting by the coastal batteries, and artillery around Cherbourg...enemy was delayed despite his superiority...". Von Kluge signs with indelible pencil receiving the document at bottom...only eight days before he would commit suicide! Also signed by an unidentified vice admiral. Some file holes and marginal chips at left, else very good.
