Twenty-second and twenty-fourth President (1885-1889, 1893-1897) of the United States, the only President to be reelected after defeat; governor of NY (1882-84). ALS, 2½pp, 4to, New York, Mar. 18, 1890. With holograph transmittal envelope. To the publisher of the Baltimore Sun. In part, “Your letter proposing that I write something for the farmers for publication in the Weekly Sun is at hand. After reflection I am of the opinion that such a course would not be for the best. It is not unlikely that I may in another way before long have something to say for their benefit. I wish the articles published in the Sun could be brought to the attention of the farmers in the West from which quarter I am daily in the receipt of applications for this type of matter. I am quite sure something is going on among them in the way of serious thinking...I have not had an opportunity to examine the articles contained in the papers you kindly sent but hope to do so in a day or two. How large a pamphlet would they make printed together and at what cost per thousand could they be struck...I am sure no one can fail to appreciate the splendid work the Sun (The Baltimore Sun)is doing...” Cleveland may be hinting that he was prepared to run for the Presidency again in two years, and the reference to Baltimore Sun in the last sentence may be a sly dig at the New York Sun newspaper. Fine. Accompanied by a very nice unsigned cabinet photo by C. M. Bell, Washington..
