GROUP TO U.S. AIR SERVICE COMBAT PILOT LT. ALEXANDER M. ROBERTS. Roberts flew on detached service with 74 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. Group consists of British-style overseas cap; 2-7/8” sterling U.S. Air Service wing with signed document of provenance; oval photograph of Lt. Roberts in uniform; 6” x 8” photograph of British SE5a as flown by Roberts; 6” x 10” copy photograph with negative of Roberts’ SE5 after it was shot down near Ypres; Roberts’ 3-1/2” x 5-1/2” German P.O.W. pledge card, stating that he “will not make any attempt to escape”; a transferal letter from Roberts listing the above items; Roberts’ one page written autobiography. Lt. Roberts was one of the “Oxford Aviators” who trained in Great Britain with Elliott White Springs. He joined 74 Squadron in France on June 18, 1918 and received confirmation for downing two enemy aircraft. On July 19, 1918, he was shot down near Ypres, and made a P.O.W.
