GROUP OF INDIANA CIVIL WAR CDVS. Lot of eight CDV's including three wearing a similar uniform with v
GROUP OF INDIANA CIVIL WAR CDVS. Lot of eight CDV's including three wearing a similar uniform with veteran's stripes, cuff braiding and embroidered "star" on breast of a nine button shell jacket. One private's cartes contains a faint pencil identification that appears to read, "J A Markley Co. D 8th Ind." This is John A. Markley who enlisted in the Company D. of the 8th in September 1861, became a veteran in January 1864 and mustered-out in August 1865. An unidentified sergeant and another private, neither with back mark, wear the identical uniform and "star" devise that looks to have a single digit numeral in the center. Colonel David Shunk commanded the 8th Indiana and a published photograph of him shows similar style non-regulation cuff braiding on his coat. After April 1864 the 8th Indiana served in the 13th and 19th Corps so the "star" is proprietary to the regiment and not associated with the 12th/20th Corps. Another view with a "Runnions, Indianapolis" back mark is a familiar looking Indiana staff-grade officer lacking shoulder boards that could be either Parrish, Brady or Kenny of the 8th. A fifth view bears the back mark of "C.A. Wade, Parkersburg, Va." showing a young private wearing a pair of unusual diamond shaped chevrons having a four-pointed star inside. We speculate that this is a 'custom' variation of the 8th Indiana star as the regiment also saw service in the Shenandoah in 1864. Another CDV depicts an unidentified navy enlisted seaman (no rating or cap tally) with the backmark of "Van Doorn, Brooklyn." A seventh image is completely unidentified, but looks like a companion of the 8th Indiana trio. Finally, there is a lithograph of the hapless General Freemont whose path led to obscurity after his premature emancipation of Missouri slaves. All combined, an interesting Indiana group in G-VG condition. PLEASE NOTE: THIS LOT WILL BE SOLD ON EBAY LIVE AUCTIONS BETWEEN 4:00-5:00pm EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME ON MAY 10, 2002.
