LORD. Late 19th, early 20th century. Albra Lord (1846-1933) of Lovell, Maine was a Yankee farmer who took up the craft of basket making. Although the various Maine Indian tribes produced outstaning splint ash baskets Lord was believed to be equal or better, he learned his craft from the Shakers. This lot includes two of his works. 1) Bent oak swing handle round example with intricately woven concave base of wide and narrow splints forming an overlapping pattern. SIZE: Overall approx 17 1/2" h x 15" dia. 2) Large round deep splint basket with solid bowed maple handles and three-dimensional splint base similar to #1. SIZE: Overall approx 14" x 15 1/2" dia. 3) Not believed to be by Lord, a round covered basket with solid bent wood fixed handle upon which the lid slides to open. The splint work of circular pattern forming a three-dimensional image. SIZE: Overall 12" h x 10 1/2" dia. CONDITION: all are in excellent condition. (05-79/TG). $600-900.
