GROTIUS ( Hugo ). The truth of the christian religion. In six books … Corrected and illustrated with notes, by Mr. Le Clerc. To which is added a seventh book concerning this question, what christian church we ought to join our selves to ; by the said Mr. le Clerc. Done into English by John Clarke, M.A. Printed for J. Knapton, 1711FIRST EDITION OF THIS TRANSLATION, pages (24), 335, (1, adverts), large 12mo, contemporary mottled panelled calf, fully gilt spine, with label, gilt : a little wear at headbands but the binding strong and otherwise a nice copy with the signed armorial bookplate, and his signature on title-page, of Thomas Greene.Landis, European Americana, 711/89 : includes references to the religious practices of the American Indians. This, Grotius's principal religious work, was first published in Leiden in 1627 in Latin. Written in a plain and direct language, it aimed to show those who would encounter pagans, Muslims, and Jews that the Christian religion was the true revealed religion. It is distinguished in the history of Christian apologetics for its precursor role in anticipating the problems expressed in 18C Deism. Hugely popular, the book was translated into English, Arabic, Persian and Chinese and remained in print until the end of the 19C.ENGLISH PRE 1801; RELIGION; THEOLOGY; TRANSLATIONS; PHILOSOPHY; ; ; ; ; ; ;
