GRISWOLD, MATTHEW
(1714 - 1799) Colonial Governor of Connecticut, an ardent patriot and a member of the Committee of Safety. War-date partly-printed D.S. "Matthew Griswold: D: Govr." on Command of Summons form, 1p. 8vo., Middletown, Oct. 9, 1781, demanding the appearance of Jabez Wood before the Justice of the Peace in order to pay a debt to his creditor. In part: "...five shillings and one penny Lawful money on Demand with the Lawful Interest until paid…". Interestingly, reference to "His Majesty" had been pre-printed in the text, but as a result of the war was crossed out. Boldly signed, very good. With a war-date A.N.S. 1p. 12mo., Middletown, Conn., Sept. 19, 1775 a promissory note to pay Elijah Treadway the mount, shown above, for "value Recd". Margin wear lightly toned, else very good. Two pieces.
