Bettesworth and C. Hitch, 1737FIRST (ONLY) EDITION, pages 404 ; 143, (1, blank), 8vo, contemporary calf : the binding heavily worn, wanting label, but sound and strong and otherwise a very good copy. Sabin 28792. Neal's History found a wide audience. There were four English editions in the 18C and more than ten editions and reprints in the 19C, including several American editions. Anglican clerics, however, assailed Neal's history. Isaac Maddox and Zachary Grey denounced the work in several pamphlets. They were encouraged to do so by Maddox's patron Edmund Gibson, bp of London, and by Thomas Sherlock, bp of Salisbury. -(ODNB).ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) COLLIER ( Jeremy ).
