GRENVILLE, GEORGE
(1712 - 1770) English statesman allied with his brother Richard and William Pitt, First Lord of the Treasury, later dismissed by George III. Good content D.S. "George Grenville" as Prime Minister, 3pp. legal folio, [Westminster], May 6, 1746 to Capt. Vaughn commander of the ship Whitehaven. The document reads in part: "...Whereas it is necessary for His Majesty's Service, that the Ships fitting out at the several Ports should be got ready with all possible Expedition for the Sea; and whereas there is a great want of Seamen to make up their Complements as well as of those Ships who are employed to cruize on the Soundings; You are hereby required and directed diligently to apply yourself to the procuring what Man you can for the Service of the Fleet..." Also possibly signed by JOHN MONTAGU (1718 - 1792), the 4th. Earl of Sandwich as First Lord of the Admiralty who signs it "Sandwich". The signature is identified in pencil as Edward Montague who served as the agent for the colony of Virginia, but judging from the context of the document, we believe it is indeed John Montague. Montague incidentally was also credited as being the inventor of the sandwich! Usual folds, A few marginal tears and one tear affecting two lines of text but can be easily repaired, third page missing bottom quarter of page, otherwise very good condition.
