(GREENE, NATHANIEL)
"Good content A.L.S. from one of Greene's subordinates JOHN STORY, 3pp. 4to., New York, Dec. 9, 1783, shortly after the British evacuation of New York, Story writes to Greene about problems in obtaining his pay at the close of the war, and congratulates Greene on the newly won peace. In part: ""...On my return form Camp... I applied to the State of Massachusetts for a Settlement of the depreciation of my pay...[they] refused to settle with me until I could obtain Certificate from you that I was not indebted to the public...In the Certificate I have mentioned the time of service...The inclosed copy of General Glover's Certificate will show when I was Appointed Quarter master to his Brigade...I should not have troubled you by letter was I not on my way for Philadelphia, and it is uncertain when I shall return, as I am riding for my health which I have been deprived of for Nine Months, and my not receiving any pay for five years has obliged me to apply the little Interest I had for my Support, that my whole dependence is from what the public woes me..."". Story then continues to ""...Congratulate you that America is blessed with so honorable a peace and ranks with the Nations of the Earth. That you have returned form the field of honor and may now enjoy the Sweets of a Private life..."".Tipped along the left margin to another sheet, otherwise very good condition." 2487 Good content A.L.S. from one of Greene's subordinates JOHN STORY, 3pp. 4to., New York, Dec. 9, 1783, shortly after the British evacuation of New York, Story writes to Greene about problems in obtaining his pay at the close of the war, and congratulates Greene on the newly won peace.
