GREENE, NATHANIEL
(1742-1786) American Revolutionary General who served with distinction as Quartermaster General and later commanded the Southern Department, successfully thwarting British efforts to subdue the southern states. War-date L.S. ""Nath Greene QMG"" 1p. 4to., West Point, Sept. 13, 1779, to Epheram Bowen, Deputy Q.M.G. In full: ""Agreeable to the inclos'd Resolve of Congress, you will wait on General Gates for his instructions and follow his directing in building the Barraks to be erected in the State of Rhode Island; exerting yourself to have them completed in season"". Ironically, Greene would replace Gates as commander of the Southern Department. Tipped to a larger sheet, usual folds, otherwise very good.
