GREENE, GEORGE S.
(1801 - 1899) Union brigadier general who fought at Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg; he also led a brigade in Sherman's March. Rare war-date partly-printed A.D.S. entirely in his hand signed twice "George S. Greene" adding rank, 2p. folio, New York, Sept. 30, 1864, concerning Greene's Civil War service record. Towards the end of the war New York began compiling service records of all soldiers from the state, and I this document, Greene answered various questions, in small part: "…Graduate U. S. Military Academy 1 July 1823…Battle of Antietam Com'dg. 2nd Div. 12th Army Corps…Battle of Gettysburg Comdg. 3rd Brig. 2 Div. 12 A. C…Battle of Wauhatchie Comdg. 3rd Brig…on night of 28 October 1863. Severely wounded in the face…musket ball entered the left corner of the nose passing through the upper jaw and right cheek…". Additionally, Greene adds the war records of two of his sons, in part: "…Lieut. Samuel Dana Greene…entered the…U.S. Naval Acdy. 1859. Second in command of Ironclad Monitor from the time commissioned…until she was lost…he commanded the Monitor in the action in Hampton Roads…after Capt. Worden was wounded…Capt. Charles t. Greene Asst. Adjt. G'l. was in the battles of Antietam…Gettysburg…Ringold were he lost his right leg…". Slight toning, very good.
