GREAT LAKES STEAMSHIP CANDELABRAS. A pair of unique ornate wrought iron candelabras from the Globe Ironworks, Cleveland, OH. Each has six lights, is 18" tall, and rests on three feet. Each of the candleholders consists of the snapped and polished neck of a champagne bottle used to christen a Great Lakes steamship built by Globe Ironworks. The foil and wire-held cork of each bottle is still in place, and onto each has been soldered a silver (probably sterling) tag engraved with the name of the ship and date it was launched. Each neck has a matching, and removable 2.75" sterling silver drip cup with an ornate beaded rim, and engraved around the circumference of the interior with a ship's name and launching date. The 12 ships represented are: North Star* (launched Feb 12, 1889); Matoa* (June 12, 1890); Seneca (June 8, 1889); Vulcan (July 10, 1889); Saxon (Oct 15, 1890); Manola (June 21, 1890); Northern Wave (Jan 3, 1889); Northern Queen* (Nov 1, 1888); Castalia (Oct 31, 1889); Maruba (May 17, 1890); Saronac (June 21, 1889); and Cayuga* (Apr. 2, 1889). (* ships lost, most in storms or collisions in fog). A unique pair from an important Great Lakes yard. Minor dents especially to silver drip pans, else very good.
