The blade is acid-etched with martial motifs. The 21st was one of many state militia units called up after the Union defeat at second Bull Run and the resulting Confederate advance into Pennsylvania. On September 4th Governor Curtin issued an alarm, calling for 50,000 Pennsylvanians to join in the defense of the State.
