GREAT BRITAIN: Victoria, 1837-1901, AV medal (7.76g), 1839, First Anglo-Afghan War Gold Medal struck for the capture of Ghanzi, GHUZNEE below fortress // date above and below crown within laurel wreath, EF, RR. On 22 July 1839, in a surprise attack, the British-led forces captured the fortress of Ghazni, which overlooks a plain leading eastward into the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The British troops blew up one city gate and marched into the city in a euphoric mood on 23 July. In taking this fortress, they suffered 200 men killed and wounded, while the Afghans lost nearly 500 men. The battle was the culmination of the British invasion of Afghanistan. The "Ghuznee" medals were only the second British medal that was awarded to all ranks after a campaign, after Waterloo. Due to the large volume, all were issued unengraved, though some recipients later had their medals personalized privately. Very rare in gold.
