GREAT BRITAIN: Victoria, 1837-1901, AR military medal, The India Medal, veiled effigy of Queen Victoria, facing left, with VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX around // British and Indian soldiers grasping standard, INDIA 1895 around, RELIEF OF CHITRAL 1895 on clasp, with new ribbon, awarded to 2455 Sepoy Sodagar Singh, 24th BL Infantry, Fine to VF, ex Ajit Singh Collection. The India Medal was a campaign medal approved in 1896 for issue to officers and men of the British and Indian armies. It was awarded for various minor military campaigns in India, chiefly for service on the North-West Frontier during 1895 to 1902. This medal replaced the India General Service Medal (1854). Each campaign was represented by a clasp on the ribbon; seven were sanctioned. The Chitral Expedition was a military expedition in 1895 sent by the British authorities to relieve the fort at Chitral which was under siege after a local coup. After the death of the old ruler power changed hands several times. An intervening British force of about 400 men was besieged in the fort until it was relieved by two expeditions, a small one from Gilgit and a larger one from Peshawar.
