GREAT BRITAIN: EXONUMIA: AE medal (14.04g), 1743/4, Eimer 582, MI II 584/224, 38mm bronze medal for the Action off Toulon, man hanging at left with naval activity in background, with letters A, B, C, and D in field with "1743/4" in exergue // couple on shoreline with troop column behind and lion attacking rooster in front, with ships in background and pier with buildings at right and the letters E, F, G, H, and I in field, very nice surfaces except for a bit of lighht oxidation at left reverse, plain edge, AU. In 1744 the French and Spanish fleets fought off a British attack in the Mediterranean at Toulon. The British were roundly defeated and Admiral Matthews was court-martialed for mismanagement of the battle and ultimately fleeing from the enemies. It is generally accepted that the letters on the medal correspond to a pamphlet that described the different scenes depicted.
